What is a Skin Biopsy?

  • Used to diagnose or rule out skin diseases including skin cancer
  • Performed under local anesthesia in minutes
  • Results arrive within 4 to 6 weeks

Biopsy Types

  • Shave biopsy: superficial sample, usually no stitches needed
  • Punch biopsy: deeper round sample, may need one stitch
  • Excisional biopsy: complete removal, closed with stitches
  • Method chosen based on size, location and clinical suspicion

The Procedure

  • Performed in the clinic, no operating room needed
  • Quick local anesthesia injection
  • Sample collection takes less than a minute
  • Area is bandaged and you can resume normal activities

Possible Outcomes

Based on the pathology results, it will be determined whether complete excision, additional treatment, or monitoring only is needed. A small scar may remain at the biopsy site.
